One of my favorite classic cocktails is the Cosmopolitan. There are so many ways to elevate the recipe to new heights. In this case, I’ve developed a new variation of this popular sipper called the Watermelon Cosmo.
If you’re a fan of the classic Cosmopolitan but crave something a bit more fresh and summery, this recipe may just be your new go-to.
First off, let’s talk about the original. The Cosmopolitan—often just called a Cosmo—is a chic, tart cocktail that gained a ton of popularity in the 90s, partly thanks to its frequent appearances in pop culture. Now, imagine taking that classic foundation and adding a splash of summer with fresh watermelon.
Start by pouring some vodka and watermelon juice into a shaker.
Watermelon juice is sweet, but it’s also incredibly refreshing and light, which makes it a perfect counterbalance to the vodka’s clean, sharp edge.
To enhance some of that natural sweetness we get from the watermelon juice, the addition of simple syrup is crucial as it helps balance out all the tasting notes at play in this recipe.
This recipe is a fresh twist on a classic, so I always strive to honor the original. That’s why I incorporate cranberry frozen concentrate instead of traditional cranberry juice.
The concentrate ensures a more flavorful mixture and delivers the tart kick that’s essential. Finally, adding lime juice introduces a citrusy zing that ties all the ingredients together.
Step 1: Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker topped with ice. Shake until chilled.
Step 2: Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass and garnish.
The Watermelon Cosmo is a delightful and refreshing twist on the classic cocktail, ideal for warm evenings or a fun brunch with friends. It replaces the punchy tartness of a traditional Cosmo with a smoother, fruitier flavor, offering a more playful and fresh experience.
Plus, its gorgeous pink hue makes it a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.
