Vesper Martini

James Bond's Vesper

Diamonds

The Vesper Martini stands as a timeless emblem of elegance. Traditionally, this cocktail is known for its distinct composition, blending gin, vodka, and the slightly bitter Lillet Blanc. However, the rise of craft spirits has seen this classic being reimagined in delightful ways. One of my own twists involves the Empress 1908 Gin, which not only adds a unique flavor profile but also bestows the drink with a captivating purple hue.

The Vesper Martini first gained fame in Ian Fleming’s 1953 James Bond novel, “Casino Royale.” It was Bond’s drink of choice, named after the novel’s enigmatic character, Vesper Lynd. Originally, the drink was made with gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet, a now-discontinued wine aperitif. Over time, as Kina Lillet ceased production, Lillet Blanc took its place, slightly altering the cocktail’s profile.

As i’m sure you can tell by the picture, this Vesper has a bit of a different look and that’s thanks to the Empress 1908 Gin. It’s infused with the vibrantly tinted butterfly pea blossom, imparting a natural indigo color. This artisanal gin, distilled in Canada, offers a mix of botanicals. You’ll note the traditional juniper, but it’s the subtle infusions of grapefruit peel, coriander seed, and cinnamon bark that create a unique blend of flavors. The gin’s citrusy and earthy tones are perfectly balanced, providing a base that’s both bold and smooth.

While vodka may seem like a neutral player, it’s essential in softening the gin’s intensity, creating a more balanced drink. Opt for a high-quality vodka to ensure a clean, crisp taste that complements rather than competes with the gin.

Replacing the original Kina Lillet, Lillet Blanc brings a slight sweetness and a hint of citrus and herbaceous notes. It rounds off the sharpness of the spirits, adding a layer of depth to the cocktail.
