Tropical Rum Old Fashioned

Diamonds

Who doesn’t love a classic cocktail with a little tropical flair?

The Tropical Old Fashioned is my latest twist on a timeless favorite—spirit-forward, smooth, and layered with flavors that transport you to a beachside sunset, no passport required.

I originally mixed this one up on a whim, hoping to bring a little brightness to a quiet evening at home. Turns out, it quickly became a new staple in my household.

My husband and I both love the balance of bold, tropical flavor with the familiar richness of a classic Old Fashioned. One sip and it’s clear—this cocktail hits the sweet spot between comfort and escape.

The foundation of this drink is, of course, pineapple rum. It’s infused with sweet, juicy pineapple essence that gives the cocktail a bright tropical note without overpowering the base.

You still get that warm, slightly spiced rum character—but it’s lifted with just the right amount of fruitiness.

To bring it all together, I made a homemade coconut banana simple syrup. Yes, it sounds like a lot—but it’s honestly easy to make, and worth it for the silky, sweet depth it adds.

Coconut brings that creamy roundness, while banana lends a soft, mellow sweetness that plays beautifully with the pineapple.

And let’s not forget the bitters—they’re essential in grounding the cocktail. A few dashes cut through the sweetness and bring that classic Old Fashioned complexity: herbal, spicy, and just a touch bitter.

The result? A cocktail that feels refined and relaxing all at once. It’s something you could sip slowly after a long day or serve on a special night in with someone you love.

Step 3: Express orange peel over the drink and garnish with a dried pineapple slice.

I like to build this one in a rocks glass with a large ice cube and garnish with a dehydrated pineapple slice or an orange twist. Nothing fancy—just clean, elegant, and intentional.

So the next time you’re craving something classic with a twist, try the Tropical Old Fashioned. It’s spirit-forward with a fruity finish, the kind of cocktail that invites you to sit back, take a breath, and savor the moment.
