The Soft Focus

An Espresso Martini

Diamonds

The Soft-Focus Espresso Martini was created for those moments when the lights are low, the conversation lingers, and sharp edges start to blur—in the best way.

Inspired by modern cocktail bars reimagining espresso martinis with restraint and elegance, this version softens the classic with creamy texture, warm vanilla-citrus notes from Licor 43, and a subtle almond finish reminiscent of marzipan pastries enjoyed late at night in European cafés.

Soft Focus starts with the aroma of espresso and almond, especially once the glass is set down in front of you. The first sip is creamy and coffee-forward, followed by gentle vanilla and nut notes that linger without heaviness. The roasted almond bitters show up quietly in the background, adding depth rather than bitterness.

In the glass, the drink has a soft, light mocha tone with a thick, smooth foam on top from a proper hard shake.

Cocktail Pairings

Almond Croissant or Almond Biscotti
Buttery, nutty, and crisp — perfect for dipping or nibbling between sips.

Dark Chocolate Truffles (70% cacao)
The bitterness plays beautifully with espresso while Licor 43’s vanilla softens the edges.

Olive Oil Cake with Almond Flour
Moist, lightly sweet, and sophisticated — a chef’s-kiss pairing.

Marzipan Petit Fours (small portions)
Keep these bite-sized. Think accent, not dessert plate.

Step 1: Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker topped with ice. Shake until chilled.

Licor 43 brings warmth, vanilla, and subtle spice. It’s the backbone of the cocktail and plays especially well with espresso and almond flavors.

Vodka adds structure without altering the flavor profile. It keeps the drink balanced and allows the other ingredients to stand out naturally.

Amaretto introduces almond sweetness and softness. It smooths the sharper edges of the espresso and adds a cozy layer to the drink.

Fresh espresso gives the cocktail its depth and character. It adds bitterness and aroma that balance the sweetness from the liqueurs.

Cream makes the drink richer, while oat milk offers a slightly lighter, still silky option. Both work well, depending on what you prefer.

Just a dash adds depth and ties the almond and coffee notes together. It’s subtle but noticeable in the finish.

Step 2: Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a few espresso beans.

The garnish keeps things simple and intentional. Espresso beans reinforce the coffee element of this recipe.

Soft Focus isn’t meant to be flashy or loud. It’s a cocktail designed for comfort, conversation, and ease. The flavors are warm, the texture is smooth, and the overall experience feels calm and balanced. Whether you’re making it for Valentine’s Day or just because you want a coffee cocktail that feels a little softer, this one earns its place in the rotation.
