Tequila Old Fashioned

Diamonds

There’s something timeless about an Old Fashioned. It’s the slow swirl of a spirit-forward cocktail in a lowball glass, citrus oils glinting on the surface. But what happens when you take that heritage and give it a little heat, a little depth, a little agave?

The Tequila Old Fashioned is what happens, and it’s the smoky, golden-hued twist you didn’t know you needed.

I’ve always loved how the classic Old Fashioned lets its spirit shine, but when I first swapped in reposado tequila instead of whiskey, it unlocked something new. That earthy, oak-aged warmth? It gives the whole cocktail a sultry glow—still strong and smooth, but with a bold Mexican twist that adds intrigue in all the right places.

This cocktail stays true to the Old Fashioned formula—minimal, balanced, iconic—but reimagines it with the vibrant character of reposado tequila.

Aged for at least two months in oak, this tequila adds gentle vanilla and caramel notes, while still letting that signature agave edge come through.

To soften and round out the flavor, simple syrup takes the place of sugar cubes. It dissolves effortlessly, allowing the spirit to stay front and center while smoothing the edges.

Then come the orange bitters—a few dashes of citrus complexity that brighten the drink and echo the fruity notes in the tequila. Just enough bitterness to keep things interesting, just enough orange to tie the whole thing together.

And finally, a generous twist of fresh orange peel, expressed over the glass to release fragrant oils, then gently placed on top.

That citrus aroma? It’s the finishing flourish that makes each sip feel warm, confident, and elevated.
