Sunset Sour


The Sunset Sour is sure to become your go-to libation this summer, perfect for savoring under the sun! Just look at its beautiful golden hue; it’s like holding a bit of sunshine in a glass. With its floral yet citrusy notes, this well-rounded and refreshing cocktail is enjoyable any time of the year. The process of crafting this cocktail is similar to my other sour recipes but with a few unique additions.

Now, let’s dive into what makes the Sunset Sour so delicious!

Sour cocktails often feature a whiskey or gin base, but I’ve enjoyed mixing things up in some of my other sour recipes. In this case, however, I’m sticking with my favorite—a gin-based sour cocktail. The herbal, floral notes in gin make it a lovely spirit for mixing flavorful cocktails. To complement these notes, I’ve also added a bit of ginger liqueur. For those unfamiliar with this liqueur, it is infused with ginger, giving the beverage a sweet, spicy taste. This boozy duo showcases the balance between the botanicals in the gin and the spicy-sweet profile of the ginger liqueur, providing a layered drinking experience.

As this is a Sunset Sour, let’s explore the citrus aspect of the recipe. I’ve added not one, but two citrus-based juices: orange and lemon juice. Lemon juice, a popular mixer in the world of cocktails, provides a needed zesty kick, while the orange juice sweetens the mix! These two work together really well to cut through some of the stronger notes from the alcoholic ingredients.

The next ingredient may surprise you, as it’s not commonly listed in most traditional cocktail recipes: turmeric. Traditionally a spice used in cuisine around the world, it pairs quite well with certain drinks when you’re mindful of the ingredients! Turmeric has a warm and slightly peppery taste, which complements the notes from our ginger liqueur beautifully. It adds an extra spiced kick while also giving the mixture its vibrant golden-yellow hue.

I’ve introduced some pretty tasty ingredients, all with very bold flavors. With that said, it’s time to sweeten things up and smooth out this cocktail! Honey is one of my favorite sweeteners to use in cocktails because it’s an all-natural alternative that still provides a sugary richness. Lastly, many of you may know by now that I love a foamy finish when creating my sour cocktail recipes. To achieve this, we opt for some egg whites. This not only gives you a cloud-like finish with each sip, but it also helps tie all the flavors of the cocktail together.

For a pretty visual touch, I sprinkled some edible gold flakes on top of the foam for a little eye-catching pop! (These are pretty easy to find online.)


Step 1: Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously (NO ice) until mixture is foamy.


Step 2: Add in some ice and shake again until chilled.


Step 3: Strain the mixture into a coupe glass and sprinkle edible gold flakes on top of the cocktail.

The Sunset Sour is a cocktail recipe you’ll want to save as the sunny days quickly approach! It features a delightful combination of floral and spiced flavors with a subtle sweetness—a blend that works so well together, and I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised.
