Strawberry Martinez

I want to share a fantastic twist on a classic cocktail that I think you’re going to love. It’s called the Strawberry Martinez, a refreshing and slightly fruity take on the traditional Martinez cocktail. The original Martinez is often considered a precursor to the Martini and features a mix of gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters.

This version introduces fresh strawberries to the mix, adding a vibrant touch to the drink.

First, we start by muddling fresh strawberry slices in a cocktail mixing glass. Muddling strawberries at the start infuses the cocktail with a light, natural sweetness and a hint of tartness. This fruity base pairs wonderfully with the other ingredients. Now, we can start building the cocktail mixture itself.

As mentioned, the classic Martinez cocktail is a gin cocktail and that’s not going to change here. Gin’s botanical flavors are what give the Martinez its distinctive character. The juniper and herbal notes from the gin are perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the strawberries and vermouth. Speaking of which, this is when the sweet vermouth is added into the workings of this recipe. This fortified wine brings a rich, slightly sweet and spicy flavor to the mix. Its complex notes of herbs and spices blend seamlessly with both the gin and the strawberries, enhancing the overall depth of this libation.

A key component in the Martinez, maraschino liqueur, adds a subtle cherry flavor with a touch of almond. In the Strawberry Martinez, it complements the fresh fruit beautifully, enhancing the drink’s fruity profile without overpowering it.

Finally, we have the last touch: the bitters. In this case, we’re using Angostura bitters. Just a few dashes add another layer of complexity, balancing out the sweetness with a gin of bitterness and spice. This is what helps round out all of the flavors and provides a satisfying finish.

Step 1: Muddle sliced strawberries in a cocktail beaker.

Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients along with ice, then stir until chilled.

Step 3: Double strain into a coupe glass.

When combined, these ingredients create a cocktail that’s both classic and contemporary, which happen to be the perfect words to describe the Strawberry Martinez. The strawberries add a modern twist to the Martinez, making it a perfect choice for those who love the classic but are looking for something a little different.

Give this fruity concoction a try and see for yourselves!
