Smoky Negroni

Diamonds

Do you have a go-to cocktail? For me, the answer is almost always a Negroni—a timeless classic that perfectly balances bitterness, sweetness, and botanicals. Traditionally made with gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth, this cocktail is simple yet sophisticated.

But you know me—I love putting a bold twist on the classics.

This time, I’m swapping out the gin for mezcal, introducing rich, smoky depth to an already elegant and complex drink. The result? A Smoky Negroni that might just outshine the original.

If you’ve never tried mezcal before, think of it as tequila’s smoky, mysterious sister.

While both spirits are distilled from agave, mezcal undergoes a unique production process—the agave is roasted in underground pits, giving the final spirit its signature smoky depth. This technique not only enhances its bold, full-bodied profile but also makes mezcal one of Mexico’s most treasured spirits.

At first, I was hesitant to incorporate mezcal into cocktails, but after experimenting, I now completely understand the hype.

This versatile, intriguing spirit adds a layer of depth that complements a wide range of ingredients—especially the bittersweet notes of a classic Negroni.

With mezcal’s earthy smokiness, Campari’s bitter complexity, and the smooth richness of sweet vermouth, this cocktail is as balanced as it is bold.

Step 1: Put all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and swish to chill.

Tip: Be careful with the liquid smoke! Too much will overpower the drink. (I used the mesquite liquid smoke from Wright’s)

Step 2: Strain into a rocks glass over a rock.

Step 3: Garnish with a rosemary sprig and orange peel.

Step 4: Light the rosemary sprig with a kitchen torch and extinguish before serving.

Now, a Smoky Negroni wouldn’t be truly smoky without a little extra fire.

While mezcal naturally brings its signature smokiness, I decided to turn up the heat—literally. This recipe calls for a rosemary garnish that’s lightly torched, allowing it to smolder for a few seconds before extinguishing.

Why? Because smoking a cocktail enhances the depth of flavor, adding an aromatic layer that makes each sip even more immersive.

When you bring this drink to your lips, you’re not just tasting the smokiness—you’re experiencing it with all your senses.

So, if you’re ready to shake up your Negroni routine, the Smoky Negroni is calling your name. Give it a try—you won’t be disappointed!
