If there’s one thing I love about mixology, it’s the chance to take a classic recipe and kick it up a notch. This Smoked Old Fashioned takes your basic old fashioned libation to a whole new level.
Plus, smoking a cocktail is the perfect way to have a bit of fun while mixing up a drink!
There are many different ways you can go about smoking a cocktail. I just so happen to have a cocktail smoking kit that made it super easy! (They’re great to keep around if you like experimenting with smoky flavors as part of your cocktail repertoire.)
This cocktail’s base consists of rye whiskey, which has a strong, earthy flavor and pairs well with the wood notes added through the smoking process. The smoke itself is created by burning wood chips, such as oak or hickory, and capturing the smoke in a glass with the cocktail mixture. This imparts a bold, smoky flavor to the drink that is balanced by a touch of sweetness from the sugar cube.
Citrus notes in an old fashioned are essential, so I decided to garnish this Smoked Old Fashioned with a candied orange, slightly seared to provide more depth to the overall smokiness of this classic drink.
Step 1: Place sugar cube in a lowball glass and add bitters.
Step 2: Add water to the sugar cube, then add the rye whiskey and stir with bar spoon to combine until sugar is mostly dissolved.
Step 3: Fill the lowball glass with smoke, and keep covered. Wait 2 minutes, then release the smoke.
Step 4: Add ice sphere, then garnish with seared orange round and Luxardo cherry.
The Smoked Old Fashioned cocktail has a complex and savory flavor profile that is achieved through the addition of a smoking process. The resulting drink is a modern and well-rounded mix of smoky, sweet, and bitter notes. A classic cocktail is a great way to go for a relaxing evening and this recipe is one you’ve just got to try! I know you’re going to love it.
