Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Diamonds

Rum paired with banana and ginger? And you’re using a blow torch? I know there may be more than one skeptic out there, but you just have to trust me on this one–the Ruth Bader Ginsberg cocktail is a lot like she was, a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. I crafted this drink in the late, great RBG’s honor, and I promise that when you mix one up for family and friends, you’re sure to get a full-court approval. So grab your cocktail shaker, because we’re raising a glass to this beloved trail blazer.

If this is your first time brouleeing a sweet-treat, don’t be alarmed. For this recipe, it’s as easy as sprinkling sugar on banana slices and using a flame to caramelize. Once the sugar is melted, set the slices aside for use as the cocktail garnish. Next on the list? Rum selection. And because we’re honoring Justice Ginsberg herself, not just any rum will do. I chose to go with a dark, rich rum whose notes of anise, cinnamon, and oaky vanilla would beautifully pair with–but not overpower–the drink’s other delicious ingredients.

There you have it, a drink as bold and balanced as its namesake–the Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The golden-caramel color of the cocktail and bruleed banana make for a sophisticated, aesthetically pleasing libation that tastes great too! The subtle spice of the ginger, delicate sweet of coconut, and tasty dark rum come together in a way that won’t disappoint. So add this drink to your cocktail repertoire, and never forget RBG’s poignant words: “When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out.”
