If you’re looking for a crisp, refreshing cocktail to whip up in minutes then I strongly recommend this Rum Sour cocktail recipe. Sour cocktails are some of my favorite go-to recipes due to their simplicity. Most of the time I have everything I need right in my kitchen.
The sour element in this drink comes from the citrus, which makes it a great cocktail to sip on and savor. The acidity of the lemon juice provides a sharp and tangy flavor that balances out the sweetness of the simple syrup. It’s a flawless combination of sweet and sour, giving you the best of both worlds in a cocktail!
The unique twist on this classic recipe is the addition of rum. The type of rum used in this Rum Sour can affect the flavor of the overall cocktail. I decided to go with a dark rum in order to provide a richer, more complex taste. Rum can also bring out the sweetness of the other ingredients in the cocktail, and depending on the type of rum, may even have caramel or vanilla notes.
As mentioned, for the sweetener I went with simple syrup, but feel free to alter for your own preference. Typically recipes call for either simple syrup or a sweet liqueur like triple sec. The sweetener helps to offset the tartness of the citrus juice, creating a balanced profile that is neither too sweet nor too sour.
Step 1: Add the rum, lemon juice and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker topped with ice. Shake until chilled.
Step 2: Pour over ice into a rocks glass and garnish with a lemon peel.
It’s that easy! Just a few steps to achieve this delicious cocktail mixture, what more could you ask for? The Rum Sour is a recipe that can be mixed to your preference which makes it that much better. I will say, I love the way this recipe turned out, but I’m all for making a cocktail suited for your taste buds. That’s what makes mixology so much fun.
