Get ready for the Rosemary Grapefruit Margarita! Yes, you read that right, yet another amazing take on a classic margarita. I will say, this has to be one of my favorite twists on the beloved cocktail due to its unique combination of flavors. It’s both citrusy and smoky with a perfectly smooth finish. What could be better? So, I say we get right into this recipe because it’s definitely one you’re going to want to hang onto for the future.
Now, I know garnishes are typically discussed last, but in this case it’s not only the first step but also a key part of this cocktail. By taking half a slice of fresh grapefruit and searing some brown sugar on top of it, you get a sweet yet smoky garnish, adding more depth to the flavor of this recipe. I’d like to think of the garnish as the icing on top of the cake for all cocktails – essential, in other words.
The foundation of this Rosemary Grapefruit Margarita recipe is similar to the classic cocktail we all know and love, but by adding in a few ingredients, you’ll take this cocktail to the next level. The base spirit of this recipe is tequila and while I typically go for a blanco when mixing tequila-centric cocktails, this margarita recipe called for reposado tequila. The aging process gives reposado tequila a smoother and more rounded character compared to blanco. Since this margarita has a bit more depth, reposado was the perfect choice.
The next essential ingredient would be the citrus element of a margarita. In addition to some lime juice, I mixed in grapefruit juice as this is the signature flavor of the recipe. Grapefruit is a delightful interplay of sweet, tangy, and bitter elements, making this the perfect cocktail for those out there who love a bit of zest!
Agave goes with margaritas as salt goes with lime! So this was an obvious addition as it’s in most traditional margarita recipes.
Finally, we have the presentation of the cocktail. For the rim I created a brown and white sugar blend to create a sweet finish while balancing out the citrusy notes of the libation. I then poured the mixture over some fresh ice and garnished with our lovely candied grapefruit slice and a sprig of fresh rosemary. Yum!
Step 1: Sprinkle brown sugar over a slice of grapefruit and torch until caramelized.
Step 2: Rim glass with lime. Mix brown and white sugar together and dip the rim of the glass in the mixture.
Step 3: In a cocktail shaker, muddle the rosemary and agave. Add grapefruit juice, tequila, lime juice and ice, shake until chilled.
Step 4: Fill prepared glass with ice and strain the mixture into the glass.
Step 5: Garnish with caramelized grapefruit and a sprig of rosemary.
With a few changes you go from you’re everyday margarita to an entirely new sipping experience. I’ve been enjoying this recipe on Friday nights and I can’t wait for you all to mix this up at home!
