Allow me to introduce the Punch Drunk Love, my take on the classic rum punch cocktail that I’ve enjoyed sipping on for years. While I’m not changing up too much from the traditional recipe, I always like to make these cocktails as simple as possible.
These days, I prefer cocktails on the bolder side, but I used to love ordering a good tropical cocktail, especially while on vacation. The rum punch is the equivalent to a tropical beach trip, just in a glass! Not only is this libation mouthwatering, its bright orange hues make it a stunning head turner.
In my opinion, this is the kind of cocktail that needs to be served in a hurricane or Collins glass as it puts a beautiful bow on an already gorgeous drink. We sip with our eyes first, and the taller glasses tend to compliment the beautiful bright color hues within this recipe. I also decided to build this concoction right in my hurricane glass, making the process that much more convenient.
The Punch Drunk Love contains a mix of both light and dark rum, but if you have a preference on a specific type of rum, please feel free to alter the recipe as you see fit! I found that incorporating both light and dark rum gives the drink a well-rounded flavor profile. The light rum gives subtle sweetness through its floral, fruity notes, while the dark rum brings out a richer complexity.
As this is a tropical cocktail, the additional flavorings consist of some of the classics: grenadine along with pineapple, orange, and lime juice. These truly solidify the tropical notes of a rum punch cocktail and are essential within the cocktail recipe.
Step 1: Fill a highball glass with ice and pour all ingredients directly in the glass, saving the grenadine for later.
Step 2: Gently stir, then top with more ice and pour grenadine over the mixture.
Step 3: Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.
I’m dedicated to not only introducing you to new, unique cocktail recipes, but also mixing up some of our favorite classic cocktails! The Punch Drunk Love is no exception! I love how easy it is to build and how gorgeous its final presentation looks.
I promise you’ll fall in love with this classic all over again!
