When it comes to classic cocktail recipes, I like to do some research regarding their origins within the world of mixology. Not only do I want to make sure I’m serving up an accurate recipe for you, but it also helps me better understand all the flavor notes that go in the mix.

The Paper Plane cocktail, like many iconic drinks, has a fascinating origin story. It was crafted in 2007 by bartender Sam Ross at the renowned New York City cocktail bar, Little Branch. Ross, a well-respected figure in the mixology world, sought to create a drink that’s perfectly balanced, while also showcasing the flavors of Amaro liqueurs. Amaro, hailing from Italy, adds a pleasant bitterness to the drink. Its herbal and citrusy undertones lend a refreshing twist, balancing the sweetness of the other components. Amaro also happens to pair perfectly with Aperol, which gives this mixture its gorgeous, bright hue.

It’s important to note that the backbone of the Paper Plane is bourbon whiskey. This popular spirit is known to bring warmth and depth to cocktail recipes. Its sweet, oaky notes provide a solid foundation for the cocktail’s complexity. If you’re like me, and appreciate a nice bottle of bourbon, the Paper Plane is the cocktail for you.

When these four components come together in a shaker, they create a cocktail that boasts a true harmony of flavors. The bourbon whiskey brings depth and richness, while the Amaro and Aperol provide a pleasant bitterness. The lemon juice, with its citrusy tang, ensures a well-balanced symphony of taste. The Paper Plane Cocktail recipe is one that you’ll definitely want to keep in mind the next time you’re craving something unique!
