What’s your favorite way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? For this Queen Bee the answer is—of course—cocktails! And while I love creating my own recipes, sometimes it’s fun to take inspiration from the friends I’ve made in this wonderful cocktail community. I recently picked up this Love Potion #9 recipe from The Cookie Rookie and, I’ve got to say, it has truly become one of my new favorites. This sipper has pomegranate juice, strawberry vodka, raspberry liqueur, and—you may have noticed—dry ice to really make the presentation pop! If you’re looking to add a little magic to your mixology game, you’ll fall in love with this cocktail recipe.
Have you ever had a cocktail with dry ice? This was a first for me, but it’s safe to say it won’t be the last—I love the way it turned out! This fun ingredient is a great way to take your cocktail-mixing skills to the next level and surely surprise any happy hour guest. And while it’s not required, adding a small piece to your shaker will give your pour a smoky look. But please be careful! I highly recommend using gloves and a utensil to handle dry ice. Why? Because if this ingredient touches bare skin, it acts like a very hot object and can easily burn. Note of caution aside, dry ice is a fascinating way to up-level any cocktail service. The wisps of smoke—which I learned are caused by evaporation—give this beautiful vodka cocktail an elevated, yet fun, feel.
Step 1: Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker, top with ice, and shake until chilled.
I recommend using POM Wonderful pomegranate juice, Chambord, and the strawberry flavored vodka from Smirnoff.
Step 2: Strain into a cocktail glass and enjoy!
Optional (and fun!): before straining, add dry ice to your shaker, being careful not to touch it with bare hands. This will give your pour a smoky look as the dry ice evaporates.
Where to get dry ice: I picked up my dry ice at the local Cash & Carry, but if you don’t happen to have one near you– check out this dry ice locator!
In addition to its intriguing aesthetics, this cocktail is to delicious to boot! Its flavors of pomegranate juice, strawberry vodka, and raspberry liqueur give this sipper well-balanced tasting notes, striking a perfect harmony between sweet and tart. In fact, my first sip had me thinking of Jolly Rancher candies! And who doesn’t love a sweet treat on Valentine’s Day? In fact, I think the Love Potion #9 cocktail is the perfect sip to serve your sweetheart any time of year.
