So, you love a good cocktail but hate the calorie count that usually tags along, right? Well, let me introduce you to the Kombucha Gin Fizz – a cocktail that’s as tasty as it is guilt-free. It’s a refreshing twist on the classic Gin Fizz, and trust me, it’s going to be your new go-to drink in the new year.
After all the festivities in the holiday season, I like having a lighter cocktail experience afterwards. I’ll be walking you through the build of this tasty sipper, so you can enjoy a Kombucha Gin Fizz yourself!
Now, you might be wondering how this Kombucha Gin Fizz stands up against the original Gin Fizz. The classic Gin Fizz is a mix of gin, lemon juice, sugar, and carbonated water. It’s simple and refreshing. Our Kombucha version, though, brings a whole new level of complexity and depth. While the classic is more straightforward, the Kombucha Gin Fizz has an intricate blend of flavors that makes it stand out.
The Kombucha Gin Fizz has quite the obvious base spirit, gin! The gin, with its botanical notes, sets a crisp and earthy base. The lemon juice adds a zesty, citrusy punch, cutting through the gin’s robustness. When these two ingredients get stirred together, they beautifully balance each other out. If you’re looking to enjoy a mocktail however, just leave out the gin all together. There are also several zero-proof spirits to substitute as well, so be sure to look into those if it interests you!
Finally getting into the star ingredient of the recipe, Kombucha. Originating in Northeast China around 220 B.C., Kombucha is a fermented tea known for its health benefits. It’s made by adding specific strains of bacteria, yeast, and sugar to black or green tea, and then allowing it to ferment. Nutrition-wise, Kombucha is a powerhouse. It’s low in calories but packed with enzymes and beneficial acids. So, not only does it add an intriguing flavor to our cocktail, but it also brings in a bunch of health perks! There are all sorts of Kombucha flavors to choose from these days but I wanted something on the sweeter side, more specifically a berry. The Cherry Kombucha really was a great choice for this recipe in my opinion. Cherry Kombucha brings in a fruity, slightly tart element, and the sparkling water adds the necessary fizz, lightening the drink.
The garnish in this recipe has a citrusy and berry zing which includes a lemon zest, Luxardo cherry, and a lemon peel twist. The lemon zest garnish intensifies the citrus aroma, while the Luxardo Cherry adds a hint of sweet sophistication. Every sip is a layered experience – you get the initial tanginess, followed by a subtle sweetness, and finally, the refreshing effervescence.
Step 1: Pour in the gin and fresh lemon juice in a high ball glass then fill it with ice.
Step 2: Stir gently until combined.
Step 3: Pour in the Kombucha, then top the glass off with sparkling water.
Step 4: Garnish with some lemon zest, a cherry, and lemon peel twist.
So, next time you’re in the mood for a cocktail but don’t want the guilt that comes with it, mix up a Kombucha Gin Fizz. It’s a drink that not only tastes amazing but can help in taking things a bit easy while not missing out in that cocktail experience we al love.
