The Bloody Mary is an essential cocktail within the world of cocktails. Known for its rich, earthy notes, its become a timeless classic. Here, I’ll be mixing up an elevated variation of the classic: The Green Bloody Mary. Rather than having the foundation of this cocktail be tomato juice, there are more veggies that come into play to bring this cocktail to life. There are several key ingredients and some prep necessary for making this cocktail, so let’s get right into things!
The ingredient that sets the foundation of this Green Bloody Mary is a freshly pressed juice consisting of a handful of vegetables and herbs, including cilantro, parsley, yellow cherry tomatoes, celery, green apple, and ginger. I started by juicing these ingredients at home from scratch. I love this component of the recipe because you get to incorporate fresh ingredients that aren’t filled with various sugars and additives. Once this portion of the prep is complete, the rest is pretty much smooth sailing, and similar to the method of the original Bloody Mary recipe.
Just like the original, the base spirit of this Green Bloody Mary is vodka – a clean, crisp spirit that provides an amazing foundation for cocktail recipes that are filled with many different tasting notes. Vodka is one of those spirits that does the job while letting the other ingredients stand out.
Dashes of Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, and horseradish are classic additions to any Bloody Mary, so I felt it was crucial to keep those in this recipe. You’ll still experience all the spices you love and expect from a tasty Bloody Mary. I’m also adding hot sauce, but since this is a Green Bloody Mary, I respectfully opted for a green hot sauce. Green hot sauces tend to have a fresher, brighter, and sometimes more tangy or citrusy flavor profiles. With this in mind, I felt it would perfectly match the other ingredients in the mix.
Last but not least, I grabbed that freshly pressed juice from earlier and poured it into the cocktail shaker, finishing things off before shaking it together with ice.
After straining the mixture over fresh ice in a glass, feel free to garnish with whatever you feel would best accompany this sipper. Personally, I went with some celery, cherry tomatoes, and a lime wedge as these are existing ingredients in the cocktail mixture itself.
Step 1: Juice tomatoes, celery, parsley, cilantro, ginger, and green apple. Strain mixture with fine mesh sieve and set aside.
Step 2: In a cocktail shaker, add remaining ingredients along with the freshly pressed juice over ice. Shake until chilled.
Step 3: Strain the mixture over fresh ice. Garnish with celery stalk, lime wedge, and cherry tomatoes.
There you have it! A Green Bloody Mary, not only is it a delicious cocktail to be enjoyed, it also happens to steer towards a lighter choice. You don’t have any sweeteners or syrups, just fresh ingredients and a bit of vodka! I love how this recipe turned out, so be sure to try it for yourselves.
