The Elderflower Blood Orange Cocktail is a libation that speaks for itself. It’s a cocktail that was truly made to enjoy with your Valentine. Everything from the deep red hue to the heart shaped candy garnish just screams Valentine’s day! For something that looks so lovely, it only takes minutes to shake up and serve. This is one of many Valentine’s Day themed cocktails I’ve shared over the years and there are plenty more to come. But let’s get into what exactly it takes to make this beautiful cocktail.
Typically, I like to start off with the base spirit of a cocktail recipe, but in this case I think the blood orange juice sets the stage for this cocktail. Blood orange juice, like the fruit itself, is known for its tartness and subtle berry-like undertones. Blood orange juice tends to have a more robust and complex flavor compared to regular orange juice. This richness can be described as a wine-like depth, setting it apart from other citrus juices. It’s also what gives this mixture that captivating deep red tone, like a fresh rose.
Speaking of citrus, I went with a citrus flavored vodka for this recipe because it only seemed right. This is a zesty cocktail to say the least, so I wanted to make sure the vodka blended in smoothly with the distinct flavors coming from the blood orange juice. It has the crisp notes of traditional vodka but with almost a lemon-like finish, which pairs with the addition of lemon juice perfectly.
The elderflower liqueur is one of my favorite cocktail ingredients. Known for its delicate and floral characteristics, elderflower liqueur is a popular choice for adding a nuanced floral character to cocktails without overwhelming other ingredients. In this case, it does just that and really smooths out those bold, tangy notes in the drink.
And just for fun, I picked up a pack of heart-shaped gummies and pinned them onto a skewer. In my opinion, this is what really makes the cocktail pop. (I love a great cocktail garnish, after all.) Plus, it makes for a tasty treat while enjoying your Elderflower Blood Orange Cocktail.
Step 1: Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker topped with ice. Shake until chilled.
Step 2: Strain the mixture into a martini glass.
Step 3: Garnish with a skewer of heart candies (gummy).
There you have it, a blend of unique yet familiar flavors come together to create the Elderflower Blood Orange Cocktail. This is a recipe that really stands out and I’m quite proud of it. Not only is it easy on the eyes, it’s a great cocktail to enjoy this upcoming Valentine’s day with your sweetheart if you’re in the mood to sip on something fun!
