I’m excited to share with you a beautiful twist on a timeless classic: the Citrus Brandy Alexander. This variation brings a fresh, zesty vibe to the traditional Brandy Alexander, making it a perfect pick for those who love a bit of citrus flair in their drinks.
Before we explore our citrus-infused star, let’s take a moment to appreciate the original Brandy Alexander. This elegant cocktail has a storied past, dating back to the early 20th century. The classic Brandy Alexander is a creamy, decadent blend of brandy, dark crème de cacao, and heavy cream, often served as a dessert cocktail. It’s known for its smooth, rich flavor and luxurious texture.
The Citrus Brandy Alexander doesn’t veer too far from this beloved original, but does have its own unique flair.
This variation maintains the creamy, indulgent nature of the original but adds a bright, citrusy twist that makes it stand out.
Brandy remains the base spirit of this cocktail, providing a warm, fruity, and slightly oaky flavor. It’s the main component of the drink, offering depth and complexity. However, unlike the dark crème de cacao used in the classic version, white crème de cacao is used here. It gives a sweet, chocolatey note without altering the color of the drink. Steering our way back to the classic recipe, we have heavy cream. Heavy cream is essential, giving the cocktail its signature luxurious, velvety texture. It balances the alcohol and adds a rich creaminess, which is my favorite part of the drink.
This is where our cocktail diverges from the original. Orange liqueur adds a bright, zesty flavor. It complements the brandy and adds a new dimension to the drink. We’re also sticking to the citrusy theme with our specific selection of garnish to finish things off here. The cocktail is garnished with a slice of orange-flavored chocolate, like Terry’s Chocolate Orange. This not only adds to the visual appeal but also enhances the citrus notes in the drink. You can set it on top of your glass (as seen above) or I’ve even dropped it right in my drink to give it an extra touch of chocolate, yum!
The choice of glass is important – the coupe’s broad bowl and stemmed design make it perfect for showcasing the smooth texture and allowing the aromas to gather.
Step 1: Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker topped with ice. Shake until chilled.
Step 2: Strain the mixture into a coupe glass.
Step 3: Garnish with a single slice of chocolate from Terry’s Orange Chocolate.
While the classic Brandy Alexander is a study in creamy, chocolate richness, the Citrus Brandy Alexander brings a lively, zesty twist to the table. The orange liqueur cuts through the creaminess, adding a refreshing brightness that makes the cocktail more versatile. It’s a drink that can be enjoyed as a dessert treat or as a sophisticated aperitif.
Cheers to a classic reinvented!
