As I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, I’ve been mixing up all things Old Fashioned. My husband loves the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, so it’s safe to say this is a recipe that is a true staple in my household. With this Chocolate Old Fashioned, I wanted to compliment the spice and oak notes from the bourbon while adding a bit more richness to the recipe. (So, I decided to turn to chocolate!)
This recipe transforms a traditional Old Fashioned into an easy dessert cocktail, suitable for those who appreciate a sweet yet still spirit-forward cocktail.
The chocolate rim is what makes this mixture so delicious. Each sip offers a smooth, sweet finish. Rimming a cocktail glass is my favorite way of enhancing some of the existing flavors within the cocktail itself. For this process, I recommend melting some milk chocolate pieces in a microwave rather than using chocolate syrup. This way, the melted chocolate is thicker and has a chance to set itself around the glass without it dripping all over the place.
This recipe as a whole doesn’t stray too far from the original, but I did add a few ingredients to give it a modern twist. Dark chocolate liqueur is an essential component of the cocktail mixture as it provides a deep, slightly sweet flavor that balances out the bourbon’s boldness.
While the chocolate notes are the star of the show here, bitters are a crucial ingredient in an Old Fashioned. They provide a bright, refreshing aroma and enhance the ingredients already in place. In addition to orange bitters, I thought to add a few dashes of cherry bitters, and they pair perfectly with the decedent chocolate flavors.
Now, let me walk you through exactly how to make this tasty cocktail.
Step 1: Rim a lowball glass with the melted chocolate bar. Stick it in the freezer for a couple of minutes for it to harden.
Step 2: In the glass, place sugar cube then add in bitters with water. Muddle until the sugar is broken down and slightly dissolved.
Step 3: Drop in the ice sphere then pour in the bourbon & dark chocolate liqueur.
Step 4: Gently stir to evenly combine the mixture and garnish with a fresh slice of orange.
The Chocolate Old Fashioned cocktail is a deliciously complex drink that combines the bold, oaky flavors of bourbon with the smooth, sweet notes of chocolate. This has become a popular dessert cocktail in my household, especially on the weekends when I’m having friends and family over. While it requires a few more steps than the original Old Fashioned, it’s so worth it!
