The White Russian is one of those timeless cocktails that perfectly blends simplicity with indulgence. Made with just three key ingredients—vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream—it’s a drink that’s rich, smooth, and just the right amount of sweet.
And with this Chai-Spiced White Russian, I’m doing one of my favorite things: giving a tried-and-true classic a seasonal upgrade. Here, I’m introducing warm flavors that make it the perfect fall sipper.
For some background, the White Russian originated in the mid-20th century and is a variation of the Black Russian, which contains only vodka and coffee liqueur.
The addition of cream made the White Russian a richer, more indulgent drink, appealing to those who like their cocktails on the creamier side (like me).
You’ll want to start by preparing the chai-spiced cream that tops this cocktail off.
Chai is such a staple in autumn, so it’s a fitting addition to the recipe. To make the topping, whip together heavy cream and chai syrup until it thickens to a silky texture. The chai syrup adds a blend of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger, which elevate the drink by bringing both warmth and complexity.
The cream is rich, yes, but the chai spices give it a slightly earthy, aromatic edge that makes it feel comforting without being too heavy. Once the cream is ready you’ll want to set it aside until the cocktail is ready to serve.
Next up, the foundation of the cocktail: vodka. In the White Russian, vodka serves as the neutral base spirit, giving the drink its kick without overpowering the other ingredients. Because vodka doesn’t have a strong flavor profile, it’s a perfect canvas for the rich, spiced, and sweet flavors that come later in this recipe.
After comes coffee liqueur—typically Kahlúa, but there are many options you can use. The coffee liqueur is what gives the White Russian its depth, with its robust, slightly sweet coffee flavor.
In this chai-spiced version, the liqueur provides a strong, roasted base that pairs beautifully with the warm spices of the chai cream.
You’ll want to pour these ingredients directly into a rocks glass over ice and give it a good stir. Then, top the drink with a generous layer of the chai-spiced cream. This is where the drink gets its indulgent texture and appearance.
Step 1: Whip together heavy cream and chai syrup until the mixture has thickened. Set aside.
Step 2: Fill a rocks glass with ice then pour in the vodka and coffee liqueur. Stir to chill.
Step 3: Top the glass off with the chai-spiced cream and sprinkle some nutmeg for garnish.
The cream sits on top of the coffee liqueur mixture, slowly swirling into it as you sip, creating that iconic White Russian gradient—from dark and bold at the bottom to creamy and rich at the top.
For a finishing touch, sprinkle a bit of nutmeg on top.
The nutmeg is a small but important detail. It brings out the subtle spices in the chai and rounds out the overall flavor.
The Chai-Spiced White Russian is a fresh, seasonal twist on the classic, blending familiar flavors with a cozy, spiced upgrade. The chai spices add a comforting warmth, while the coffee liqueur and vodka maintain the bold, rich character of the original.
If you enjoy the traditional White Russian, this version introduces just enough spice to make it stand out!
