Blood Orange Spritzer

Diamonds

Nothing beats a delicious, refreshing spritzer and the Blood Orange Spritzer does not disappoint in these elements! This cocktail is not only a tasty treat, but it brings in those sweet and fruity flavors that I love. This is a well-rounded cocktail to say the least and I cannot wait to share all the details with you so you can mix it up for yourselves.

To start, there is a sugar rim around the glass to really smooth out those citrus-heavy flavors you’ll taste when sipping this Blood Orange Spritzer. It’s a simple yet necessary touch to completely tie together this libation, so I recommend not skipping this step! Once, the glass is rimmed, set it aside until the cocktail mixture is ready to be poured in.

Speaking of which, this is a cocktail with vodka base. This is a recipe that is full of flavor, and vodka is the kind of spirit that provides the boozy kick we’re looking for while letting the important flavors shine. I typically go with Tito’s since it’s a bottle that can be found in any market or liquor store, but if you have a specific brand you prefer, then go ahead and add that to your personalized recipe.

Getting into the juice element of the recipe, we have two flavorful juices that will make this the perfect sipper when you’re looking for something that carries a natural sweetness. Since this is a Blood Orange Spritzer, we’re going to pour in some fresh blood orange juice. While orange juice is a common mixer in cocktails, the blood orange juice elevates the tasting experience a bit. One of the most distinctive aspects of blood orange juice is its slight raspberry or strawberry-like flavor, which is not found in your everyday orange juice. This gives it a unique complexity and depth of flavor which I love to look for in a nice cocktail.

The other juice we’re mixing in is mango juice! Mango juice is known for its rich, tropical flavor as well as having a bit of a thicker texture. The inherent sweetness of both juices combines to create a base that is rich and intensely flavorful. The berry-like undertones of the blood orange juice and the tropical notes of the mango juice create a layered cocktail experience, with each sip revealing different facets of sweetness, tartness, and floral notes.

Every cocktail recipe needs a bit of acidity and a sweetener to really create a solid experience. In this case I’m pulling in a cocktail classic: lime juice. This cuts through those sweet notes we get from the other fruit juices and makes the drink that much more refreshing. As for the sweetness, I went with a nice agave syrup. Compared to honey or maple syrup (which I frequently use in recipes), agave syrup has a relatively mild flavor. This allows for the syrup to do its job without overpowering the other ingredients and their respective notes.

Once those ingredients are shaken together with ice, you’ll want to go ahead and fill your prepared glass with ice. Then, pour your cocktail mixture into your glass. This is when the fun part comes in! I topped off the glass with the orange flavored Poppi beverage. Poppi’s sodas are marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional soft drinks, offering the gut health benefits of prebiotics from apple cider vinegar while maintaining appealing flavors and a lower sugar content than regular sodas. The orange flavor brings a citrusy, sweet, and slightly tart taste to the lineup, ideal for this kind of recipe. Rather than using a regular sparkling water variant, this provides the cocktail with that much more flavor.
