Blackberry Bourbon Sidecar

The Blackberry Bourbon Sidecar is a fruity take on the classic Sidecar Cocktail. While spending an evening at a bar with my husband, I stumbled across this cocktail and fell in love. And of course, in Queen Bee fashion I had to mix this one up at home to share with you all! It’s smooth, fruity, and refreshing so I’m certain you’ll love it from the first sip.

As the name of this cocktail is a Blackberry Bourbon Sidecar, it’s pretty easy to guess the base spirit of this cocktail. I loved this tasty spin on the traditional recipe since it originally called for cognac. Bourbon is a huge hit in my household. There’s nothing better than sipping on a smooth bourbon in the evening when winding down. That said, utilizing this spirit in cocktails is always exciting for me. Bourbon is a type of whiskey known for its sweeter notes, and so it holds up to the addition of blackberries perfectly.

Blackberries themselves have a bit of a complex flavor profile with their sweet (yet slightly tart) notes. They’re also known to have earthy, wine-like elements as well, which blend perfectly with bourbon. I always make sure to use fresh ingredients when I can, so rather than opting for a blackberry liqueur or syrup, I muddled them up right in the cocktail shaker. This allows all their natural juices to flow and their flavors to stand out in the cocktail mixture. This approach will always beat artificial flavorings in my opinion. Not to mention, the blackberries are what give this cocktail its lovely deep magenta hue.

Lemon juice is a cocktail essential, providing the mixture with that refreshing finish we all love. I almost always mix in lemon or lime juice in my cocktail recipes, so this choice seems pretty self-explanatory.

The final ingredient that helps tie these complex and smoky flavors together is Cointreau liqueur. This is a type of orange liqueur similar to Triple Sec. I prefer Cointreau because its known for its high quality flavor derived from both sweet and bitter orange peels. This allows for the intense yet smooth flavors of the orange to really shine with each sip you take. However, if you prefer Triple Sec for your cocktail experience, then choose what you like best!

The simple mix of these 4 ingredients make a delicious libation that is full of flavor.
