Avocado Margarita

The Avocado Margarita is a cocktail that’s truly unlike any other, I can assure you! It offers a smooth, slightly velvety blend with tangy, spiced flavors that took me by surprise. It’s quite similar to your standard margarita recipe, but with a few special additions, I’ve crafted a truly unique sipper.

A simple rule of thumb is to always prepare your glass first before mixing your cocktail. This ensures the glass is ready for serving as soon as your drink is mixed, allowing you to enjoy your creation without delay. For this particular drink, I’ve prepared a Tajin-rimmed rocks glass. Tajin, a beloved Mexican seasoning, is an excellent choice for rimming a glass for tequila-based drinks, such as a margarita, thanks to its spicy, sour, and salty flavor profile that complements each sip of this Avocado Margarita perfectly. Simply rim your glass with a lime wedge and then dip it into a plate of Tajin, and it’s ready to go!

Moving on, let’s focus on the cocktail’s main ingredient: avocado. Take half of a fresh avocado and scoop it into your cocktail shaker. Next, you’ll muddle the avocado with some lime juice and just a pinch of Tajin from your glass prep. Muddling releases the avocado’s smooth, buttery texture, enriching the drink with a creamy richness. The lime juice and Tajin provide a delightful zesty edge when combined with the avocado.

Once those ingredients are muddled and broken down evenly, pour in the remaining ingredients. As this is a margarita, the base spirit of this recipe is of course, tequila! Mixing avocado and tequila together in a cocktail introduces an interesting layer of depth that you won’t find in other margarita recipes. I used a blanco tequila as they tend to have a more clean, agave-forward finish so the avocado element of this drink doesn’t get overpowered.

To sweeten the drink, I’ve added triple sec and agave nectar. Agave nectar is an obvious choice as it harmonizes beautifully with the tequila, both derived from the agave plant, naturally complementing each other. Triple sec, an orange liqueur, brings sweetness while also amplifying the drink’s citrus notes.

You want to make sure to shake this cocktail really well so that all the ingredients have a chance to evenly combine.

Step 1: Rim a glass with lime and Tajin. Set aside.

Step 2: Muddle fresh avocado, Tajin, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker.

Step 3: Add remaining ingredients and ice to shaker and shake until chilled.

Step 4: Strain into glass over ice and garnish.

The Avocado Margarita is a variation of the classic margarita, but it truly has a life of its own! It pays homage to the classic while also offering a completely new sipping experience. If you’re a fan of avocados and tequila, this is the drink for you! It may seem like a surprising recipe but trust me, don’t knock it until you try it. One sip and it might just become your new favorite.
