Aperol Cinnamon Spritz

I’m excited to talk about a cocktail that’s been making waves in my household this season – the Aperol Cinnamon Spritz. This isn’t just your ordinary cocktail; it’s a delightful variation of the classic fan favorite Aperol Spritz. This iconic drink hails from Italy and has been a staple in Italian cafés since the early 20th century. Originally a Venetian mix of white wine and a splash of soda, it evolved into the Aperol Spritz we know today: Aperol, Prosecco, and soda water. This classic has been synonymous with leisurely afternoons and a laid-back lifestyle. Not only is it delicious, every step of this cocktail is build right in the glass, you just pour and serve!

Now, let’s get into this latest twist on a beloved recipe – the Aperol Cinnamon Spritz.

With respect to it’s name, Aperol Cinnamon Spritz, the foundation that sets this cocktail mixture is the Aperol itself. Aperol is an Italian aperitif with a distinct orange-red hue and a unique blend of bitter and sweet flavors. It’s made from a secret recipe that includes oranges, herbs, and roots, offering a complex and zesty foundation for this libation.

To further compliment the seasonal element of this drink, we have the addition of apple cider. Apple cider in this cocktail isn’t just any apple juice; it’s a fermented drink that brings a rich, slightly tangy sweetness, reminiscent of apple orchards in the fall. Apple cider also happens to pair perfectly with another classic flavor in the holiday season: cinnamon. Homemade cinnamon simple syrup is what sets this drink apart. It’s a blend of sugar, water, and cinnamon sticks, simmered to perfection. This syrup infuses a sweet, warm spice into the drink, which I absolutely love! Adding onto these tasty ingredients is the ginger liqueur. This liqueur adds a vibrant, spicy-sweet layer. Its sharp, peppery taste contrasts beautifully with the other tasting notes, adding depth and a hint of intrigue.

As mentioned earlier, the traditional recipes calls for a topping of Prosecco and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing! Prosecco, like in the classic spritz, adds effervescence and lightness. Its crisp, fruity profile complements the spicier components, ensuring the drink remains refreshing. Besides, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of bubbly?

Finally, finishing things off with the garnish: a piece of star anise and a cinnamon stick are more than mere decorations. They add a subtle, aromatic complexity that enhances the drink’s overall appeal, as any garnish should.

Step 1: Fill a stem glass with plenty of ice.

Step 2: Pour in all your ingredients aside from the Prosecco.

Step 3: Top off the rest of the mixture with Prosecco.

Step 4: Garnish with a cinnamon stick and star anise.

While the classic Aperol Spritz is synonymous with summer days, the Aperol Cinnamon Spritz is like a warm embrace during the cooler months. It’s a drink that transcends the simplicity of its predecessor, offering a more layered and nuanced experience.

So, when you’re in the mood for something uniquely delicious, give the Aperol Cinnamon Spritz a try. (And don’t forget to check out my other variations on the Aperol Spritz – the Fall Aperol Spritz and the Apple Cider Aperol Spritz.)
