The other day, I was craving a cocktail that was smooth, bright, and easy to make—something that felt a little nostalgic but still completely fresh.
So naturally, I whipped up an Amaretto Sour.
It’s golden, balanced, and quietly complex, with notes of citrus, almond, and bourbon that unfold with every sip.
This drink has history, but it doesn’t feel dated.
What started as a sweet-and-simple 70s favorite has been reimagined into something with real presence. The color is eye-catching, the flavor is dialed in, and the texture is velvety enough to slow you down in the best way.
Amaretto leads with its signature almond warmth, soft and just a little bitter around the edges. Fresh lemon juice snaps it into balance, adding brightness that keeps the drink crisp instead of cloying.
A touch of simple syrup smooths out the sharpness, making each sip round and approachable.
Then comes the bourbon. It’s the surprise element that transforms the cocktail from playful to polished. Rich and warm, it anchors the lightness with a subtle depth that lingers just long enough.
And to finish? A layer of egg white foam. Light, silky, and undeniably satisfying. It’s that final touch that elevates the experience, giving the drink a luxe texture that makes it feel thoughtfully made.
The Amaretto Sour is a go-to for nights when you want something approachable but not boring. It’s easy to mix, pretty in the glass, and full of flavor that lives somewhere between retro comfort and modern cool.
Step 1: Add amaretto, bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white to a shaker and dry-shake (no ice) for 15 seconds.
A quick “dry shake” (shaking without ice) creates that signature frothy top, giving the Amaretto Sour its luxurious feel.
Step 2: Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
Step 3: Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
The Amaretto Sour has come a long way! From a simple, sweet drink to a beautifully balanced cocktail that highlights both its almond and citrus flavors.
With rich Amaretto, bold bourbon, and a bright citrus kick, this version is the perfect balance of sweet and sour, smooth and strong.
So go ahead, shake one up and enjoy this modern classic.
