The World of Whiskey: A Guide to Whiskey Cocktails

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably decided to dive headfirst into the fascinating world of whiskey. Congratulations, because you’re about to embark on a journey filled with rich flavors, intriguing history, and a whole lot of fun.
Whiskey is more than just a drink; it’s a world of flavors and stories waiting to be explored. With its diverse range of types, from Scotch and Irish to American bourbon and rye, there’s a whiskey out there for everyone. But why stop at sipping it neat when you can create delightful cocktails that showcase whiskey’s versatility?
Types of Whiskey
Scotch Whisky
A true classic, Scotch whisky.
Single Malt Scotch is often considered the gold standard. It’s crafted from malted barley at a single distillery, allowing for distinctive regional flavors. Blended Scotch, on the other hand, combines the expertise of multiple distilleries, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors.
Bourbon
This whiskey is often associated with Kentucky, and rightly so, as the state produces some of the most delicious Bourbons in the world. It’s a sweet, full-bodied spirit with notes of vanilla, caramel, and a touch of spice.
Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey is typically triple-distilled for extra smoothness and aged in a variety of casks, which imparts a wide array of flavors.
Rye Whiskey
If you’re looking for a bit more bite in your whiskey, give Rye a try. Made from at least 51% rye grain, this whiskey is known for its spiciness, which can range from subtle to intense.
Japanese Whisky
In recent years, Japanese whisky has taken the world by storm. Drawing inspiration from Scotch whisky, Japanese distillers have masterfully crafted their own unique expressions.

Classic Whiskey Cocktails
The Classic Old Fashioned is the quintessential whiskey cocktail. It’s simple, elegant, and lets the whiskey shine. To make one, muddle a sugar cube with a few dashes of Angostura bitters and some water, add ice, and your favorite whiskey. Give it a gentle stir and garnish with an orange twist and a maraschino cherry. Here are a few of my favorite Queen Bee variations on the Old Fashioned:
- Chocolate Old Fashioned
- Smoked Old Fashioned
- Pecan Old Fashioned
- Glampfire Old Fashioned
- Apple Butter Old Fashioned
2. Whiskey Sour: A Tangy Delight
Craving something a bit more zesty? The Whiskey Sour is your answer. Mix two parts whiskey with one part fresh lemon juice and half a part simple syrup (made by dissolving equal parts sugar and hot water). Shake it all up with ice, strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Below I’ve linked some of my favorite Queen Bee whiskey sour variations. Here are a few of my favorite Queen Bee variations on the Whiskey Sour:
3. Manhattan: A Classy Affair
If you’re feeling sophisticated, the Manhattan is your go-to cocktail. Combine two parts whiskey with one part sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura bitters. Stir it over ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a cherry or a twist of orange peel. Here are a few of my favorite Queen Bee variations on the Manhattan:
Queen Bee Mixology Whiskey Cocktails

- Apple Of My Eye
- Half & Half Boilermaker
- Sassy Southern Sipper
- Fever Reliever
- The Buck Stops Here
- And a crowd favorite, the Limelight

Remember, the world of whiskey is all about personal preferences. Some folks swear by bourbon, while others adore the smoky allure of Scotch. You might prefer your cocktails on the sweeter side or enjoy the boldness of a whiskey-forward concoction. The beauty of whiskey is that there’s no right or wrong way to enjoy it—just your way.
So, as you embark on your whiskey journey, keep an open mind and an eager palate. Try different whiskeys, explore new cocktails, and share your experiences with friends. Whiskey has a way of bringing people together, sparking conversations, and creating lasting memories.
